Assistance Programs for Ethiopians
in Israel and Ethiopia

United Jewish Communities (UJC) of MetroWest NJ understands its obligation to continue to nurture the Ethiopian community, to ensure that it, like waves of immigrants before it, will assume a full place in the life of Israel. UJC supports a wide range of programs and services for the Ethiopian community. Many of these services are provided in partnership with Jewish communities across North America through our primary overseas partners. In addition, UJC has several programs it specifically supports. more

Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) Assistance Programs

UJC MetroWest also supports programs for Ethiopian families through the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), the overseas arm of the American Jewish community. JDC serves the needs of Jews throughout the world, particularly where their lives as Jews are threatened or made more difficult.

Assistance Programs

The Jewish Agency is a global partnership committed to the Jewish future that stands on a history-making track record. Working together with UJC MetroWest and other Jewish communities around the world, this partnership serves a with dual purpose: to keep the promise to every Jew who, for any reason, at any time, chooses to come home to Israel; and to put Israel into the lives of the Jewish world's next generation.

The Jewish Agency has brought more than 3 million people to Israel, including thousands of Jews from Ethiopia who seek to leave their home and build a new life in Israel, their homeland.

Operation Atzmaut was piloted by United Jewish Communities of MetroWest NJ in conjunction with the City of Rishon LeZion, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, and the Ethiopian-Israeli community. Falas Mura Nutrition Program
UJC has, with several other federations, sustained critical nutrition for Falas Mura families in Ethiopia awaiting an opportunity to emigrate to Israel. The Feeding Center in Gondar is open six days a week. Adults – usually mothers – bring children under age six to the center, sometimes walking for up to four hours to complete two round trips. more

MILIM – A Head Start for Ethiopian Children
MILIM (Hebrew for words) is YEDID’s intensive program to prepare Ethiopian kindergarten children for first grade and increase their chances for a successful academic future. As part of the program, YEDID works with their parents to help them understand the Israeli educational system and its expectation for parents to be partners in learning. Ofakim, one of UJC MetroWest’s sister cities in Israel, has two MILIM groups, with a total of 30 children. Each session lasts four hours. more
SPNI: Friends by Nature
Studies show that one of the best ways to integrate Ethiopian youth in Israel is by focusing on their connection to the land, nature, and environment. The Society for Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) runs several groups for Ethiopian youngsters who study, hike, and explore the country together. The program involves parents as well and enables the Ethiopian youth to integrate much better. more
